Getting online in the Bahamas is easy. Keeping that connection private, and reaching the services you already pay for at home, takes a little more work. Visitors notice that their Netflix library changes the moment they land in Nassau. Resort, hotel and cruise-port Wi-Fi is shared with hundreds of strangers. And a US bank can flag a login that suddenly arrives from a Bahamian IP address.
A good VPN handles all three problems. It wraps your traffic in an encrypted tunnel, lets you pick a server back home, and keeps your browsing away from whoever runs the network. Residents get the same protection, plus a way to reach US streaming catalogs from their own living rooms.
We ranked six providers by the scores from our full reviews. Then we checked each one against the Bahamas specifically: whether it offers a Bahamian IP, how close its US servers sit, how well it streams over Miami, and whether its kill switch and DNS protection hold up when an island connection starts to drop.
Best VPNs for the Bahamas: quick list
Every provider below has an audited no-logs policy, fast servers on the US East Coast and a money-back guarantee of at least 30 days on its long plans.
Best VPNs for the Bahamas compared
The table puts the Bahamas-specific details side by side. A location marked virtual gives you a Bahamian IP address, but your traffic actually exits from a server somewhere else, usually in the US.

NordVPN and Proton VPN prices are promotional rates that move with each sale, so expect them to shift by tens of cents from week to week. Country counts for NordVPN and PIA also keep climbing as both add locations.
How we tested VPNs for the Bahamas
Each score here comes from our full review of that service, where it went through speed, leak and streaming checks before earning a recommendation. For this guide, we added a Bahamas layer on top.
First, we went through each provider's server list to find out whether it offers a Bahamas location and whether that location is physical or virtual. Those lists showed us that CyberGhost's Nassau servers are real, while NordVPN, Surfshark, ExpressVPN and PIA host their Bahamas IPs elsewhere. Proton has none.
Next, we connected to the US East servers closest to the islands, mainly Miami, Atlanta and New York. Those are the servers you'll use for US streaming and banking, so we judged each provider on how much speed it kept there and whether Netflix and other services played without a fight. We also ran DNS leak tests and watched how the kill switches behaved when the connection dropped.
Finally, we weighed renewal prices, device limits, refund windows and whether an independent auditor has checked each no-logs claim.
Unless you specifically need a Bahamian IP, pick a Miami server. It is the closest physical location for every provider on this list and usually the fastest route to US services.
The best VPNs for the Bahamas, reviewed
1. NordVPN: best VPN for the Bahamas overall
NordVPN's Bahamas location shows why a server list deserves a careful read. Connecting to it gives you a Bahamian IP address, but NordVPN hosts that virtual location on a physical server in the United States. For raw speed, we skipped it and connected straight to Miami, which does the same job by a more direct route. On a Miami server, NordVPN kept most of a fast hotel line's speed, and US Netflix and HBO Max streamed without buffering. DNS leak tests stayed clean throughout, even when the connection underneath was unstable.
Key features:
- NordLynx, built on WireGuard, with post-quantum encryption, plus OpenVPN and NordWhisper obfuscation
- Internet and App kill switches, split tunneling and Threat Protection ad and malware blocking
- SmartPlay smart DNS, Double VPN, Onion Over VPN and Meshnet
A few servers felt sluggish, but in most cases switching to a different server solved the problem. NordVPN was founded in 2012 and is incorporated in Panama. It has passed six independent no-logs assessments, and NordVPN's latest Deloitte no-logs assurance was announced in February 2026.
The 2-year Basic plan runs from about $3.09 to $3.49 a month, because NordVPN's promo price moves with its sales. Our full NordVPN review covers every plan in detail.
Pros
- US servers in every state, so a closer option is always available if Miami is busy
- 10 simultaneous connections on one account
- Apps for routers and Android TV as well as phones and computers
Cons
- On mobile, the option to pick a specific city hides behind a three-dot menu
- Renewal charges land about two weeks before the term ends
2. Proton VPN: best for privacy
Proton VPN ties NordVPN on our score at 9.0, but it takes the opposite approach to the Bahamas. It has no Bahamas server at all, so it is a pick for privacy and US East browsing, not for getting a Bahamian IP. What it offers instead is honesty about where its servers really sit.
When we opened the desktop app's location list and selected Jamaica, the Smart Routing note stated that the server is physically located in Miami, United States. Proton names the physical host for every Smart Routing location. The Dominican Republic, Haiti and Cuba carry the same Miami label, so all four Caribbean IPs exit in Florida. On those Miami-hosted servers our speed loss stayed small, which makes Proton a strong everyday choice for browsing and banking. Peak streaming hours were the exception, when Proton was not always the fastest option we could pick.
Proton runs over 400 servers in the United States and covers 140+ countries. Proton AG launched the service in 2017 and is based in Switzerland. Proton's Securitum no-logs audit has now run five years in a row, with the latest report added in June 2026.
Key features:
- Stealth protocol alongside WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2
- Secure Core multi-hop, NetShield and split tunneling on paid plans
- VPN Accelerator, 10 Gbps servers and a kill switch on every plan
VPN Plus costs $9.99 month to month. On the 2-year plan it starts from about $3 a month, though that rate changes between sales. Paid plans cover 10 devices. Our Proton VPN review explains how Secure Core routing works in practice.
Pros
- Open-source apps
- Apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Chromebook, Android, iPhone and Android TV
- A free plan with unlimited data and no ads
Cons
- No Bahamas server
- Live chat is for paying customers only and can take several minutes to answer
3. ExpressVPN: most consistent speeds for travelers
Where Proton wins on transparency, ExpressVPN wins on close server choices. It runs two separate physical Miami locations, listed as Miami and Miami - 2, plus Atlanta, New York and Washington DC. That gave us several nearby options whenever one location felt busy. ExpressVPN also completed its initial connection faster than NordVPN did, and its macOS app felt smoother to use. On a Miami server over a fast resort connection, 4K streaming ran without lag.
Netflix, Hulu, Disney+ and BBC iPlayer all worked, and Hulu played in HD. ExpressVPN labels its Bahamas location as virtual and has servers in 113 countries.
Key features:
- Lightway protocol with post-quantum protection, plus OpenVPN and IKEv2
- Network Lock kill switch, automatic obfuscation and Threat Manager
- TrustedServer RAM-only servers and the Aircove router option
The company was founded in 2009 in the British Virgin Islands and has been owned by Kape Technologies since 2021. ExpressVPN's 2025 KPMG assessment covered its TrustedServer setup and privacy policy. Plans run $2.99 (Basic), $4.49 (Advanced) and $7.49 (Pro) a month on the 2-year term, and they autorenew at $99.95, $119.95 and $199.95 a year. Our ExpressVPN review breaks down what each tier adds.
Pros
- MediaStreamer smart DNS for Fire TV, Apple TV, Roku and smart TVs
- Up to 14 devices on the Pro tier
Cons
- Costs more than the rest of the group, especially after renewal
- Split tunneling is not available on iOS
4. Surfshark: best value for multiple devices
Surfshark costs less than ExpressVPN and removes the device question entirely, because one subscription covers unlimited devices. That makes it an easy fit for a family sharing hotel Wi-Fi in Nassau, where every phone and laptop needs the same protection. Setup took under five minutes from download to a connected server. Surfshark connected quickly and was easy on the battery over mobile data. CleanWeb also blocked a large share of ads on ad-heavy travel sites.
Speeds fluctuated on certain servers from one session to the next. Latency also jumped at times on nearby servers, which we noticed in calls and gaming but not in browsing. When we started Disney+ on a US East server, playback took a second or two of buffering before it began.
Key features:
- 4 virtual Bahamas servers in 1 location, with Puerto Rico as its only other Caribbean location
- 24 US cities, including Miami, Atlanta, New York, Ashburn, Charlotte and Boston
- WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2, with Camouflage mode, NoBorders mode and Dynamic MultiHop
Surfshark has 4,500+ servers in 100 countries. It was founded in 2018, is based in the Netherlands and merged with Nord Security in 2022. Surfshark's second Deloitte no-logs verification came in 2025, following the first in 2023. The Starter plan costs $2.49 a month on the 2-year term and renews at about $79 a year. Surfshark does not print that renewal amount on its pricing page, and the figure varies by term and currency. Our Surfshark review covers the higher tiers.
Pros
- Apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, iOS, Android, Fire TV and Apple TV
Cons
- Less consistent from session to session than the top three
- Renewal price is not shown up front
5. CyberGhost: easiest for beginners
Where Surfshark's Bahamas location is virtual, CyberGhost runs physical servers in Nassau, so its Bahamas IP does not route through the US. Those servers reach local Bahamian content such as the Our News channel. The live server list showed 22 Nassau servers, while the Bahamas marketing page claims 35. The live count changes as servers rotate.
It is also the easiest app to get running. On first launch, the Windows app connected to a US East server in under ten seconds with no configuration. Its dedicated streaming servers for Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, Disney+ and Prime Video worked on the first try, without cycling through servers. On nearby US East servers, CyberGhost kept about 80% of our download speed, while long-haul servers lost more than half. When we dropped the connection on Android, the kill switch cut traffic within about two seconds, and leak tests came back clean.
Key features:
- Smart Rules that auto-connect the VPN when the device joins an untrusted network
- WireGuard, OpenVPN and IKEv2, with AES-256 or ChaCha20 encryption
CyberGhost covers 100 countries with around 9,500 servers. It is owned by Kape, which also owns ExpressVPN and Private Internet Access. CyberGhost's third Deloitte privacy audit followed earlier audits in 2022 and 2024, and its audit page was updated in February 2026. The 2 years + 2 months plan costs $2.19 a month ($56.94 for the first 26 months), the 6-month plan is $6.99 a month and a single month is $12.99. Renewal runs at roughly double the introductory rate, though the buy page words it ambiguously and promotions change it. Our CyberGhost review has the full breakdown.
Pros
- 45-day money-back guarantee on the 6-month and 2-year plans
- Streaming servers labelled by service, so there is no guessing
Cons
- 7 devices is tighter than the 10 or unlimited most rivals allow
- iOS reconnects take about eight seconds versus five on Android, and iOS lacks split tunneling
- Speeds can dip during peak hours, and Smart Rules is harder to find on macOS
6. Private Internet Access: best budget pick
Private Internet Access matches CyberGhost's 8.4 score and undercuts it on long-term price. Its 3 years + 3 months plan costs $2.03 a month, billed as $79 upfront and renewing at $79 every 3 years. That is the lowest long-term price in this guide, and it comes with unlimited devices.
PIA also covers more Caribbean IPs than any other pick. Alongside a Bahamas virtual region with port forwarding, it offers Jamaica, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Trinidad and Tobago, the Cayman Islands, Bermuda and Cuba. Its physical US East regions are Florida, Atlanta, New York and Washington DC. None of its US regions support port forwarding.
Privacy held up well. When we force-closed the app mid-session, our real IP never appeared, and IP, DNS and WebRTC leak tests all came back clean. There is one catch: traffic can leak after a system reboot before the tunnel comes up. Switch on the advanced (Always) kill switch to close that gap.
Streaming worked, but it took more effort. PIA unblocked Netflix, HBO Max and Hulu, and Apple TV+ worked on US servers. Still, some services needed a server switch or two before they played. Speeds also swung noticeably from test to test, with download drops sometimes past 50%.
Key features:
- WireGuard and OpenVPN, with standard and advanced kill switches
- MACE ad and tracker blocker, RAM-only servers and open-source apps
PIA lists servers in 112 countries, a total that keeps climbing as it adds locations. Its third Deloitte no-logs audit was completed in December 2025, following earlier audits in 2022 and 2024. PIA's privacy audit page explains the first engagement. Our PIA review covers the advanced settings.
Pros
- Port forwarding on the Bahamas region
- Apps for Android TV, Apple TV and routers
Cons
- No smart DNS tool for devices that cannot run its app
- Speeds are less predictable than the rest of the group
Why you need a VPN in the Bahamas
You don't need a VPN to get online in the Bahamas. The internet there is open and widely used, with 94.8% of the population online. You need one for what happens on the networks you join, and for the accounts you reach through them. Streaming has its own section below.
Public Wi-Fi at resorts, airports and cruise ports
Resort, airport and cruise-port networks are shared by everyone in range. A VPN adds an extra layer of protection by encrypting everything between your device and the VPN server, so other people on the network see only scrambled traffic. Our guide to the best VPNs for public Wi-Fi goes deeper on that risk.
Connection quality varies a lot by island. Coverage is strong in Nassau and Freeport, but on the Exumas and other Out Islands, resort Wi-Fi often runs over satellite and is slow and patchy. Those connections drop intermittently, especially in bad weather. An enabled kill switch stops your traffic leaking during a drop. Our explainer on what a VPN kill switch does covers how it works.
Mobile data brings its own quirks. All-inclusive resorts often charge for Wi-Fi, so many visitors use a local SIM from BTC or Aliv instead. An eSIM installed before departure activates on landing and avoids the airport SIM queues. On eSIM or local mobile data, WireGuard is the fastest and most battery-friendly protocol. Mobile data also cuts in and out on ferry crossings and boat trips. Turning on auto-connect plus a kill switch keeps the tunnel up without manual reconnects.
Keep the VPN on while your phone hands off between mobile data and hotel Wi-Fi. That avoids a gap where traffic goes out unprotected. Our roundup of the best VPNs for travel has more on planning a multi-country trip.
Online banking and privacy on island networks
Online banking is where a VPN earns its keep for visitors. A US or European bank can flag or restrict a login that comes from a Bahamian IP, and connecting to a server in your home country avoids that. Residents traveling abroad face the reverse problem, since they need a Bahamas IP to reach Bahamian banking from overseas.
On the legal side, the Data Protection (Privacy of Personal Information) Act, 2003 covers how public and private organisations handle personal data in the Bahamas. The Data Protection Commissioner enforces it and can investigate complaints and restrict transfers of personal data abroad. A replacement Data Protection Bill, 2025 is pending but not yet law.
Are VPNs legal in the Bahamas?
Yes, VPNs are legal in the Bahamas. No law bans personal VPN use, although anything illegal without a VPN, such as copyright infringement, stays illegal with one.
The country's record on online freedom backs this up. Freedom House's Freedom in the World 2026 report scores the Bahamas 90/100 and rates it Free, with 38/40 for political rights and 52/60 for civil liberties. It gives a full 4/4 on whether people can express personal views without fear of surveillance. That is close to the 91/100 the Bahamas scored in the 2020 edition.
There is no systematic censorship. We found that VPN connections run without interference, and there is no local blocking or VPN detection to work around. Telecoms are regulated by URCA, the Utilities Regulation and Competition Authority, which oversees operators such as BTC and Cable Bahamas.
Streaming in the Bahamas with a VPN
Most streaming trouble in the Bahamas comes from licensing, not government blocking. Netflix, Hulu and other services decide which shows you see based on your IP address, so a Bahamian IP gets a different catalog from the one you have at home.
The fix is a US server, and the Miami, Atlanta and New York servers are the natural choice because they sit closest to the islands. A Bahamian fixed line has a median download speed of about 82.03 Mbps. Ookla updates its country medians monthly, so the figure moves between reports. Our list of the best VPNs for streaming ranks providers by how many services they unblock.
Hotel TVs and streaming sticks are harder, since most can't run a VPN app. NordVPN's SmartPlay and ExpressVPN's MediaStreamer smart DNS tools cover that gap, while PIA has no equivalent. For Bahamian content such as the Our News channel, you need a Bahamas IP instead. The CyberGhost review above explains the most direct option. If Netflix is your main concern, see our picks for the best VPN for Netflix.
How to get a VPN in the Bahamas
Getting a VPN running takes a few minutes, and it is worth doing at home before you travel. Install and test the app first with browsing, WhatsApp and a streaming app, so you aren't stuck troubleshooting on resort Wi-Fi.
- Choose a provider from our list above, using the comparison table to match it to what you need most.
- Sign up on the provider's website and pick a long plan for the best monthly rate. Every pick has at least a 30-day money-back guarantee on its long plans.
- Download the app for each device you'll bring, then sign in.
- Open Settings → Protocol and choose WireGuard, or the provider's own version (NordLynx on NordVPN, Lightway on ExpressVPN).
- Open Settings → Kill switch and turn it on. Turn on auto-connect for untrusted networks if the app offers it.
- Connect to a Miami server for US services, or to a server in your home country for banking.
- Run a DNS leak test to confirm your traffic goes through the VPN. Our explainer on what a DNS leak is shows what a clean result looks like.
Our step-by-step guide on how to set up a VPN covers each device in more detail.
How to get a Bahamas IP address
Five of our six picks offer a Bahamian IP, and the comparison table above shows which locations are physical and which are virtual.
- Open the app's server list and type "Bahamas" into the search box.
- Select the Bahamas location and connect.
- Open an IP lookup site to confirm your address now shows the Bahamas.
If you want to switch between a Bahamas server and a Miami one during your trip, our guide on how to change your VPN location covers each app.
Can you use a free VPN in the Bahamas?
You can, but we wouldn't trust one with banking or streaming. Free VPNs are often slow or poorly encrypted, and streaming services tend to block them. Free tiers also carry data caps or fixed server assignment, so you rarely get the location you need.
Some free services also pay their way with your data. In 2017, the Center for Democracy & Technology's complaint against Hotspot Shield alleged that the free VPN injected JavaScript for ads and tracking, used at least five third-party tracking libraries and redirected traffic to partner sites. AnchorFree, the company behind it, denied wrongdoing.
A free VPN that injects ads or tracking code defeats the point of using a VPN on resort Wi-Fi. If you want to try before you pay, use a paid plan's money-back guarantee instead.
Proton VPN Free is the exception we'd consider. It offers unlimited data with no ads on one device, but it assigns you to servers in 10 countries automatically and has no Bahamas server. On the free plan you cannot choose a country, and free servers get crowded at peak hours. Our roundup of the best free VPNs we tested compares the other options.
Why is my VPN not working in the Bahamas?
VPNs aren't blocked in the Bahamas, so a failed or slow connection almost always comes down to the network or the app settings. These fixes solve most problems:
- Switch servers. When speeds sag, switching to another server helps more often than turning the VPN off.
- Change the protocol. If the VPN will not connect, moving from WireGuard to IKEv2, or the reverse, usually fixes it.
- Sign in to the hotel network first. Accept the Wi-Fi login page in your browser, then connect the VPN.
- Expect slower satellite Wi-Fi on the Out Islands. Pick the nearest Miami server and keep the kill switch on for the drops.
- Use a streaming server. If a service still shows the wrong library, try a different US server or the provider's labelled streaming servers.
- Check your bank's location. If a banking app blocks you, connect to a server in the country where the account is held.

Final verdict
Every VPN on this list will protect you on resort and hotel Wi-Fi, so the right choice comes down to what you need most. If privacy comes first, Proton VPN ties for the top score and runs the most transparent server network. If you need a Bahamian IP that stays on the islands, CyberGhost is the only pick with physical Nassau servers. PIA suits tight budgets, and Surfshark suits a family sharing one subscription. For everyone else, NordVPN is the one we'd install first.
